Year 1

Summer term 2022 - Street party for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee

We had a great time celebrating the Queen's Jubilee. We all decorated our own crowns to wear for the party. First we had a special assembly and then we had a fantastic party. We each had a special dinner, with special sandwiches to celebrate the Queen. We then had a party together to celebrate as a school together!

Summer term 2022 - Enchanted Forest Sparkling Start

When returning back to school after the Easter break, our forest had been taken over by fairies.  They had left us a special video to show them sparkling their magic in the forest. They decorated it with bunting, glitter and messages. Year 1 children had to hunt for the notes around the forest, and also found some fairy doors! We read all the notes to find out that the fairies had brought all of year 1 fairy cakes and a special necklace. We spent the rest of our sparkling start making our own fairy wands and creating our own fairies doors to let the fairies in.

Paws, Claws and Dinosaurs Fab Finish

On Friday 1st April, we had some very special visitors come and visit year 1. They were called 'Portals to the Past'. They brought along lots of amazing dinosaur sculptures for us to look at and learn about different types of dinosaurs. We also got to see some real life dinosaur fossils! We then were all surprised when we got a special visit from Mary Annning, who was the lady who first discovered some dinosaur fossils.

During our fab finish we also made our own dinosaur masks and took part in one of our 7 before 7 challenges, which is to make or break a record. We set a record for the most children were a dinosaur mask!

Science week 14.03.22-18.03.22

We were very excited when we came into school on Monday 14th March, to discover we had tadpoles in our classroom for science week. During this week we learnt all about the life cycle of a frog. We were all engrossed in this learning and found out lots of different information.

Skipping Day 10th March 2022

Playground Playtimes came into our school and taught us all about skipping. We learnt what to do when you are learning to skip. We learnt about hopping, kangaroo and frog jumps, whilst skipping.  We all showed great resilience as this is something that can be quite tricky. Lots of us brought some skipping ropes and have been enjoying skipping now during our playtimes and lunchtimes.

World Book Day

Thursday 3rd March

For world book day we all dressed as one of our favourite book characters. We shared lots of different stories with each other and shared what books are our favourite and explained why. We also listened to different teacher's favourite stories.

Paws, Claws and Dinosaurs - Sparkling start

Our first day back to school in the Autumn term was a fun one! We had our sparkling start for our new topic, Paws, Claws and Dinosaurs. This term our focus is on animals, and in Spring 2 we will focus on Dinosaurs.

For our sparkling start we created binoculars, went on a safari and spotted animals, in phonics we used our sounds to write animal name and we also went on an animal footprint hunt! We had so much fun and learnt lots of new facts about animals which will help us this term in our writing.

In the afternoon we also made animals out of paper plates and had a crafting afternoon. Below are some pictures of the fun we had.

Great Fire of London - Fab Finish

At the end of the term we had a 'fab finish' to celebrate all the amazing learning we had done. We use feathers and paint to write like Samuel Pepys with a quill and ink. We also built houses like those in London during the fire and discussed how and why the fire spread. We were also lucky enough to go into the forest and have a real fire with the paper houses we had made. Here are some pictures of the fun we had!

The Great Fire of London - Autumn 2

In the second half of the Autumn term we learnt about the Great Fire of London. To start the topic we had lots of questions, here are a few examples:

  • Where did the fire start?
  • How long did it last for?
  • Who started the fire?
  • Was it an accident?
  • How did the fire stop?
  • Why didn't the fire stop quicker?

During the topic Year 1 learnt about Thomas Farriner and Samuel Pepys. We learnt why this individuals are significant and the role they played during the Great Fire of London. We completed writing in the form of a diary, we sequenced the events and described the scene using our senses!

Anti-Bullying week

This year for Anti-Bullying week the theme was 'One kind word'. We ensured this message was spread through Year 1 and the activities we did during the week. To kick start our week we had 'Odd sock' day to show how we are all different and unique and we loved wearing silly socks! On this day we also moved around the other KS1 classes to try out different activities to get us to think about how to be good, kind friends. Here are a selection of photos showing the activities we did.

Mini Marathon Day - Monday 18th November

We were raising money for new sports equipment for the school by completing a mini marathon. We all came into school dressed in our sports gear ready to take on the challenge! Cedar and Sycamore completed their marathon together outside with one class running and the other doing some fantastic cheering! To complete the marathon we aimed for 8 laps of the playground, although it was hard, we all managed it and had great fun running!

Superheroes in the Big City - Autumn 1

During the first half of the Autumn term we learnt about Superheroes, both real and made up. First we learnt about real-life heroes, such as doctors, firemen, policemen and nurses. We learnt about what they do to help people in the community.

Then we read the story 'Supertato' and wrote character descriptions. We learnt about adjectives and how to write descriptive sentences/

Here are a few examples of what we wrote...

"Supertato has a red mask. He is wearing a black soft cape."

"Supertato has rough skin."

"Evil Pea is bright green and small."

In Maths we learnt all about numbers. We used practical resources like numicon, cubes and counting bears to help us make numbers.

We learnt how to write and represent numbers 1-20, how to find 1 more and 1 less, greater than and less than and also finding tens and ones in a number.

Sparkling Start in Autumn 1  2021

Our Sparkling start for the 'Superheroes in the Big City' was based all on real life superheroes! Children were invited to dress up as their favourite superhero. We spent the day discussing and writing what out superpowers are, creating a superhero shield and even met a real-life hero!  We had the opportunity to meet a paramedic. We asked him lots of questions. Such as:

"Who drives the ambulance?"

"How fast can you go?"

"How many people have you saved?"
